Man out on parole for manslaughter accused of choking girlfriend: Durham police

Durham Regional Police have arrested a man who allegedly ambushed his girlfriend and choked her while he was out on parole for manslaughter and kidnapping.

Investigators say the 33-year-old suspect, whose name is being withheld to protect the victim’s identify, hid in his girlfriend’s vehicle on April 9, 2024, and choked her when she entered the vehicle.

“The victim was able to break free and call for help,” a police release states. “The accused, who had an ankle monitoring bracelet on, removed it as he fled the area.”

The suspect, who lives in Oshawa, was found in Barrie and taken into custody without incident.

He’s facing charges of assault (spousal), choking, fail to comply with a release order, mischief and possession contrary to a prohibition order.
