Levels of toxic emissions from the Port Lands gas plant are so high they could imperil the construction of tall residential buildings along the eastern waterfront — land that has been remediated and flood-protected at public expense to prepare for new housing.
According to an air quality assessment report prepared for the developer of towers on Villiers Island, emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) from the plant’s smokestacks are seven times higher than the legal limit at the 160-metre height of the tallest proposed building.
