A Toronto police officer has been charged in connection with the serious injury of a 53-year-old man in February.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has charged a constable with one count of assault causing bodily harm, according to a Wednesday news release. He is due to appear in court on Oct. 14.
The province’s police watchdog didn’t provide further detail on the incident that seriously injured the man this winter, saying only that the SIU’s director “has reasonable grounds to believe a Toronto Police Service officer committed a criminal offence.”
The SIU said in its release it won’t comment further as the matter is before the courts.
The SIU is an independent agency that investigates police conduct in incidents that results in death, serious injury, the discharge of a firearm or allegations of sexual assault.
