An 11-year-old girl is in hospital after she was struck by a transit bus in Mississauga Thursday afternoon, police say.
Peel Regional Police received a call at 2:30 p.m. that a girl had been struck by a MiWay transit bus in front of Lisgar Middle School, Const. Tyler Bell said outside the school Thursday.
The girl was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition, Bell said. He said her condition is now stable and arrangements are being made to transfer her to the Hospital for Sick Children.
Bell said it’s too early in the investigation to provide much detail on what happened, but did say the bus was travelling southbound on Lisgar Drive around the time school was letting out when the girl crossed in front of it. Bell said police believe there was heavy traffic in the area at the time.
The driver and the bus remained on scene, he said.
Lisgar Drive, in front of the middle school, is closed between Beacham and Dillingwood drives, Bell said.
A spokesperson for the City of Mississauga, which manages MiWay, said in an email that the transit agency is co-operating with the Peel Regional Police investigation of the incident.
“Our thoughts are with the pedestrian and their family during this difficult time,” spokesperson Irene McCutcheon said in the email.
