A man is dead and two others are suffering life-threatening injuries after a pit collapsed on them Monday, according to Toronto police.

Police say the men were fixing a sewer pipe in the Bayview Avenue and Ruddington Avenue area, when the pit collapsed around 5:25 p.m.

Toronto Fire Services said the three workers were trapped in an excavation and that a “trench rescue” was underway, without providing further details.

While it’s still unclear who the three employees worked for, police say Ontario’s Ministry of Labour has taken over the investigation. CBC News has reached out to the ministry for further information.
