‘This is not a Hindu and Sikh battle’: The complex history behind protests that erupted at GTA temples this week over Indian consular visits

It was supposed to be a weekend of Indian sweets and celebrations, with Diwali events planned across the Toronto area, and for most, it was a time of lights, fireworks, food and family gatherings.

But on Sunday afternoon at the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton, strains between Khalistan-supporting Sikhs, there to protest the presence of Indian consular officials, and members of the congregation boiled over, leading to two days of escalating events and, at times, violence that has resulted in four arrested and both a Peel police officer and Hindu priest suspended from their jobs.
