‘Foreign interference has no place in our legal system’: Lawyers argue wiretaps can’t be used in bid to deport alleged Mafia boss

Italian authorities successfully pressured Canadian police to break wiretap laws when two suspected mobsters visited Toronto, an immigration hearing was told.

The wiretaps in question were made in the GTA in 2020 and filed in the deportation case of Vincenzo (Jimmy) DeMaria, a GTA grandfather, baker and convicted killer, before the Immigration and Refugee Board. He came to the GTA from Italy when he was nine months old but never sought Canadian citizenship.
