Police search for suspects after gun fired in Etobicoke high school stairwell

Police are searching for two suspects after a shots were fired inside a stairwell at an Etobicoke high school on Tuesday.

Silverthorn Collegiate Institute on Mill Road near Burnhamthorpe Road was locked down after reports of gunfire inside at 4 p.m., according to a letter sent to parents and guardians by Principal Mark Varvas.

The lockdown was lifted at about 6:45 p.m., Varvas said.

Toronto police said 120 people were inside at the time at the time of the gunfire — 60 who were there for a basketball game and 60 who were preparing for an open house that had been scheduled for Tuesday night.

Two masked people brought the gun to the school, Duty Senior Officer Saleem Husain told reporters. No one was injured, but police have not yet made any arrests.

Police swept the school during the lockdown and members of the police’s emergency task force went room to room to ensure no suspects were still inside.

Varvas said in the letter there will be a police presence at the school Wednesday and social work staff will be available to support students.

“The safety and well-being of students and staff is always our top priority,” Varvas said.

The Toronto police guns and gangs unit has taken over the investigation.

Anyone with relevant dashboard camera or cellphone video is being asked to contact police. No suspect descriptions have been released.
