Why Toronto is seeing a wave of violent jewelry store robberies

A recent rash of daylight smash-and-grab jewelry store robberies in the GTA is part of a general increase in low-end, violent — and often preventable — crime, experts say.

“Jewelry is easy to transport, difficult to trace, and is worth significant amounts of money,” even if thieves only get back a portion of the value, said criminologist Irvin Waller, emeritus professor at the University of Ottawa.
