Two teens caught ‘red-handed’ during alleged car theft in Hamilton

Two teens are facing several charges after they were caught “red-handed” during an alleged car theft in Hamilton.

Investigators say on January 15, detectives witnessed a stolen vehicle linked to warm-up theft investigations drop off two people at another stolen vehicle before fleeing the area at a high rate of speed.

A video posted by police shows one person in each vehicle hanging out the passenger side window as the vehicles weave and speed away.

“Investigators maintained their focus on the two individuals who had entered the second vehicle and quickly arrested them before they could flee. The investigation further revealed that this vehicle had been used in a gas theft the previous evening,” police said in a release on Thursday.

A 16-year-old boy from Hamilton has been charged with two counts of occupying a stolen motor vehicle, possession over $5,000 and theft of gasoline under $5,000.

A 16-year-old girl from Hamilton has been charged with occupying a stolen motor vehicle and possession over $5,000.

The names of the accused are protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Police are also warning the public to never leave vehicles running and unattended, lock the doors and if possible use a remote starting device when it comes to warming up their vehicle on cold days.
