Broken power rail shuts down Line 1 TTC subway service from Wilson to Lawrence West

Subway service is down on Line 1 between Wilson and Lawrence West due to a broken power rail, the TTC said Wednesday morning.

Workers found a gap within the power rail at the southbound track at Yorkdale station around 6 a.m., a spokesperson for the TTC said.

Crews are working on emergency repairs, the TTC added. Shuttle buses are running.

“We apologize for the inconvenience customers are experiencing during this morning’s rush hour on Line 1,” TTC media relations said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

Service was initially suspended between Sheppard West and Lawrence West earlier Wednesday morning.

Riders wait for shuttle bus in frigid temperatures

Crowds gathered outside Lawrence West Station Wednesday morning, waiting for a shuttle bus in frigid weather.

“Save the hassle and take the car,” said rider Eric Sharda.

“We’re all going to be late for work,” he said. “Hopefully HR is good with this.”

Temperatures were -18 C in Toronto at 8 a.m., with wind chill making it feel like -27 C, according to Environment Canada.

Toronto and the rest of the GTA are currently under an extreme cold weather warning caused by an Arctic air mass bringing bitterly cold winds to the area, the federal weather agency said.
