Taking the subway? Expect delays on parts of the TTC due to blowing snow and icy rails

Toronto subway riders may face delays of up to 10 minutes on the TTC’s Line 1 and part of Line 2 between Woodbine and Kennedy stations due to weather-related issues, the transit agency says.

The TTC announced the delays on Wednesday morning.

The delays on Line 1 are due to “extreme wind and blowing snow affecting train yards,” the TTC said in a post on X, formerly Twitter. Icy rail conditions to blame for delays on Line 2, it said.

“Crews continue to do hard work in brutal conditions to get more trains out,” the TTC said.

Customers can use GO Transit for the cost of a TTC fare at Main Street and Kennedy stations on Line 2, the TTC said. Shuttle buses are also running, a spokesperson told CBC Toronto.

On Line 1, 37 of 55 scheduled trains are currently running, the transit agency said.

Service between Woodbine and Kennedy stations was briefly shut down Wednesday but has since resumed with the delays. Wednesday marked the second time the TTC partially shut down subway service this week due to weather conditions.

On Monday morning, service was temporarily suspended on Line 1 between Bloor-Yonge and Eglinton due to ice on the rails. Service resumed Monday afternoon.

These service disruptions come as Toronto continues to dig out from back-to-back storms that blanketed the city in snow last week.

Mayor Olivia Chow said the city is working toward making the TTC more reliable, but the “extraordinary amount” of snow that fell can cause difficulties.

“We can’t control weather. We can always try to improve our service,” she said at a news conference Wednesday morning.
