Toronto Blue Jays: what you need to know about going to a game if you’re visiting Toronto

The Toronto Blue Jays are playing baseball in the city again and that means it’s time to go to a game.

If you want to attend a Blue Jays game when you’re visiting Toronto, there’s a lot you need to know!

You don’t have to spend a lot of money and can actually go to a game on a budget without sacrificing the classic ballpark experience.

Whether you’re coming from another part of Canada, somewhere in the U.S., or any country around the world, a Jays game should be on your list of things to do when visiting the city.

So, here’s what you need to know about attending a Blue Jays game if you’re visiting Toronto and want to experience baseball in the city!

When do the Toronto Blue Jays play?

The 2024 MLB season runs from March 28 to September 29.

For the postseason this year, games are set to start on October 1 and game seven of the World Series is scheduled for November 2 — but a team could potentially win it all with four straight wins.

Each team in the MLB plays 162 games during the regular season.

If a team makes it into the postseason, they would play additional games until they are eliminated or win the World Series.

For the Blue Jays specifically, half of the regular season games are played at home in Toronto with the final game before the postseason happening on Sunday, September 29, 2024.

So, you have a lot of chances to go to a baseball game in Toronto whether you’re rooting for the home team or seeing your team play an away game here in the city.

Where do the Toronto Blue Jays play?

As you know from the name, the Toronto Blue Jays play in Toronto.

Unlike other sports teams that have stadiums outside the city centre, the Jays play games nestled into the hustle and bustle of Toronto.

The team’s ballpark is the Rogers Centre and it’s located right in the city’s downtown core at 1 Blue Jays Way. Yes, the street is named after the team!

When the roof — or dome as locals call it — is open during good weather, you can even see the CN Tower from your seat in the stadium.

How do you get Toronto Blue Jays tickets?

Ticket purchases are not available at the Rogers Centre.

So, if you want to go to a game, you have to buy Blue Jays tickets online through Ticketmaster.

The cheapest tickets at the ballpark are the Outfield District Tickets which cost only $20.

With a ticket for the Outfield District, you don’t have an assigned seat but you have access to social areas and retro-style bleacher seats that aren’t reserved.

Typically, regular seat tickets start at $25 in the 500 section, $53 to $111 in the 200 section, $78 to $177 in the 100 section, and over $1,000 in first rows behind home plate between the dugouts.

You should be able to buy tickets at the last minute right before the first pitch for most games unless there’s some serious star power on the opposing team.

How do you get to a Toronto Blue Jays game?

When you’re visiting Toronto and staying in the city, you can get to a Blue Jays game at the Rogers Centre a few ways.

The cheapest option is walking, if you’re able, especially if the weather is nice. You’re bound to spot other fans heading to the game too.

If you’d rather take public transit, the TTC costs $3.35 for a single fare or $3.30 when using credit or debit cards.

Since the TTC operates subways, buses and streetcars, you have options depending on where you’re coming from.

For the subway, the Union stop is a 10-minute walk away from the Rogers Centre.

For buses and streetcars, there are stops to the west of the stadium along Spadina Avenue, south along Queens Quay, east along Bay Street and north along King Street.

If you’re further away from the downtown core, GO Transit operates trains and buses into the city’s Union Station which isn’t far from the Rogers Centre.

It costs around $3 to $6 for a single fare, depending on where you start the trip.

There are also Bike Share Toronto spots around the city where you can rent a bike and cycle to the Rogers Centre.

It costs $1 to unlock your ride and then $0.12 per minute for classic bicycles or $0.20 per minute for e-bikes.

If you want a bike for the whole day, it costs $15 to get a Day Pass for unlimited 90-minute rides on a bicycle for 24 hours.

What is there to do at a Toronto Blue Jays game?

If you’re wondering what else there is to do at a Blue Jays game besides actually watching the game, you can eat, drink, check out the ballpark’s neighbourhoods and take part in free activities.

Blue Jays games have your classic ballpark foods and drinks.

If you’re looking to save a bit of money, you could take advantage of Loonie Dogs Night and Dugout Deals.

Dugout Deals concessions are ballpark favourites — including hot dogs, nachos, popcorn, chips, ice cream, soft drinks, Budweiser, and Bud Light — that you can get for less than $6.

These deals are available in sections 240 and 537.

Every Tuesday home game of the 2024 season is a Loonie Dogs Night. Never heard of a loonie? It’s a Canadian $1 coin so that means hot dogs only cost a dollar.

Concession stands offer $1 hot dogs and since demand is high for these cheap eats, you may be limited to four hot dogs per transaction.

Schneiders Porch in the 200 level even has a hot dog teeter-totter!

There are five Outfield District neighbourhoods — Corona Rooftop Patio, TD Park Social, The Catch Bar, The Stop, and WestJet Flight Deck — that you can explore for no extra cost.

Also, at home games, the Blue Jays host theme nights with free things to do around the stadium. That includes Country Night, Pride Night, Salsa Night, Fan Appreciation Weekend and more.

You can also get free merch on those theme nights and special giveaway nights.

Just make sure to get there early because it’s only for the first 15,000 fans through the gates.

There you have it! Enjoy the ballgame.
