Toronto under severe thunderstorm watch as cold front approaches

Toronto is under a severe thunderstorm watch on Wednesday afternoon, Environment Canada says.

“Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain,” the federal department says in the watch.

Hazards include wind gusts of up to 90 kilometres per hour and toonie-sized hail.

Areas north of the city, including Barrie, Innisfil, southern Grey County, Haliburton, Port Carling, Port Severn and Northern Peterborough County, remain under a severe thunderstorm warning.

For the areas under a warning, Environment Canada says its meteorologists are currently tracking storms “capable of producing very strong wind gusts and up to nickel size hail” as they pass through Ontario.

Environment Canada advises people to “take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches.”
