Man dead, 1 charged with first-degree murder after Weston and Sheppard stabbing

A man in his 30s has died, and another man has been charged with first-degree murder after a stabbing in the area of Weston Road and Sheppard Avenue West on Friday morning.

Toronto police were called to the location for reports of a person with a knife outside an apartment building shortly before 7:00 a.m.

A man was found with a stab wound and taken to hospital in critical condition via emergency run. He was later pronounced dead in hospital.

The victim has been identified as Dimitri Smith, 32, of Toronto.

A man, found with a knife, was arrested at the scene. Dean Joel Constance, 46, of Toronto, has been charged with first-degree murder. He attended court virtually at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre on Friday.

Inspector Peter Wehby said the stabbing was the result of a dispute that started inside the building.

He did not confirm if the men were residents of the building but said they were “known to the building” and known to stay there.

He added that the men knew each other and the incident was targeted.

One resident who has lived in the building for eight years tells CityNews he was shocked to hear of the stabbing.

“It’s a very safe building … things like this have never happened before. I’m very surprised,” said Mohammed.

Charles, who moved into the building two months ago echoes those sentiments.

“It’s a peaceful environment, I’m surprised,” he said.

“It scares me — something where you live — it happened just like that,” said another building resident.
