On the morning of March 10, 1988, the life of 14-year-old Joey Philion, and his family, changed forever. Caught in a house fire that devoured their home in Orillia, Joey suffered burns to 98 per cent of his body. He wasn’t expected to survive the day. However, through sheer force of will, and love for, and from, his family, Joey didn’t just survive, but miraculously recovered from his burns with the help of dedicated doctors and nurses from The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and the Shriners Hospital for Children in Boston.
As a result of his survival and subsequent recovery, Joey was hailed by the Canadian and international media as a hero. Unfortunately, that fame came at a price that took a heavy toll on Joey and his family.
