‘How is this allowed to happen?’: She used all her savings to buy an east Hamilton townhouse. So why is she living in her car?

After a sudden layoff forced her to sell her Mississauga home last December, Ayesha Asghar scrambled what little savings and severance she had left to buy a modest two-storey townhome in east Hamilton.

“I wanted to rebuild my life,” said the 36-year-old, a casualty of last year’s sweeping tech sector layoffs. “I couldn’t afford mortgage payments after losing my job and Hamilton was an opportunity to downsize, regroup myself and focus on rebuilding my life and career.”

Townhouse on Ellis

Ayesha Asghar says the tenants living in the Ellis Avenue townhouse she purchased have caused significant damage to the property, including leaving “piles and piles” of garbage in its front yard. One of the tenants rejected claims that the property is damaged.
