The head of an Ontario Hockey League team is expressing condolences to the family and friends of two people who died after a shooting in Oshawa on the weekend.
Roger Hunt, general manager and vice-president of the Oshawa Generals, said in a statement on Monday that the team is saddened to hear of the deaths of Patrick Montgomery, 42, and Andrieana Montgomery, 42.
“With the loss of these two lives, our thoughts and prayers immediately go out to the remaining family members and children,” Hunt said in the statement.
Hunt said Patrick Montgomery was a former left-winger and played on the Generals from 1999 to 2002. He said Andrieana was an arts and music teacher at Bowmanville High School.
After spending three seasons with the Generals, Patrick Montgomery went to play at Brock University for four years, Hunt said. Following his university career, Montgomery continued to play for the Brantford Blast, Whitby Dunlops, and the Norwood Vipers, he added.
“The Oshawa Generals and hockey community mourn the loss of these two lives and wish for healing for everyone affected by this tragedy.”
According to Durham Regional Police, officers responded to the sound of gunshots at a home in the area of Jane Avenue and Glenforest Street at about 12:35 p.m. on Saturday.
Officer found a man suffering from gunshot wounds. The man died en route to hospital.
Officers then learned about a second home on Glenforest Street, where they found a woman who had also been shot. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
A man, 30, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths, police have said.
The suspect is known to the victims, but police said the incident is not domestic related.
