One person is dead and two others are injured after a three-vehicle collision in Markham on Monday afternoon, paramedics in York Region say.

The multi-vehicle crash happened in the intersection of Don Mills Road and Simonston Boulevard, near Steeles Avenue E. and Highway 404, according to York Regional Police. Officers were called to the area about 1:40 p.m.

Paramedics said three people were taken to hospital. One was pronounced dead there, another person was seriously injured, while the third person was taken for assessment.

According to police, a large box truck crossed into opposite lanes and collided with two sedans, trapping one person under the truck. One sedan sustained extensive damage, police said. Police provided no other details.

Roads north and south of the collision have been closed as police investigate.
