3 Toronto men arrested after Markham mall carjacking

Three Toronto men are facing multiple charges, York Regional Police say, after a carjacking in a Markham mall parking lot.

It happened on Tuesday afternoon around 3:45 p.m. in the area of McCowan Road and Highway 7, investigators said in a news release.

The victim was loading items into their white Mercedes G-Wagon SUV when two men approached them, demanded the keys and then took off in the vehicle, according to police. No one was injured.

Officers in York Regional Police’s helicopter later found the victim’s vehicle in a plaza in the area of Dufferin Street and Clark Avenue in Vaughan.

Two men were spotted hiding in a nearby wooded area, which was caught on camera:

“I have actually two people kind of hiding in the trees … they might be just lovers and unrelated, but, uh, looks kind of unusual,” an officer can be overheard saying on the recording.

The two men were arrested, police said, while a third man was arrested in Toronto the next day.

The vehicle that man was driving at the time had also been stolen in York Region, police said.

Three Toronto men now face charges including robbery and disguise with intent.

At the time of the incident, two of the men were out on bail for unrelated charges, and have also been charged with breach of probation, police say.
