Brandie Wilkerson and Melissa Humana-Paredes are going for legendary status as they are the first Canadian duo (men or women) to play for gold at the Olympic Games; they battle Brazil’s Ana Patricia Ramos & Eduarda Santos Lisboa (Duda) for the top spot.

Canada’s Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson earned the women’s beach volleyball silver medal on Friday at the Paris Olympics.

The Toronto duo, ranked No. 7 in the world, fell to No. 1-ranked Ana Patricia and Duda of Brazil in three sets.

Humana-Paredes and WIlkerson dropped the first set 26-24 before winning the second one 12-21. Brazil won the tie breaker 15-10 at Eiffel Tower Stadium.

Canadian athletes have never reached the podium in the women’s event at the Olympics.

Humana-Paredes and WIlkerson lost two of three matches in pool play and won a lucky-loser match just to reach
the round of 16.

They shared a fifth-place finish with different partners at the Tokyo Games in 2021.

Canada’s only other Olympic beach volleyball medal came in 1996 when Mark Heese and John Child won men’s bronze in Atlanta.

More to come.
