It was a great day for Ethiopian distance runners in Toronto on Sunday, as Mulugeta Uma and Waganesh Mekasha won the Toronto Waterfront Marathon men’s and women’s titles, respectively.
Uma won the men’s race in a time of two hours seven minutes 16 seconds, while Mekasha was the first woman across the line in 2:20:44.
The elite race also doubles as the Canadian championships, with Justin Kent (2:12:17, seventh overall) and Natasha Wodak (2:27:54, fifth place) claiming the Canadian men’s and women’s titles.
Wodak finished more than five minutes ahead of the next closest Canadian women’s finisher, Leslie Sexton, who was seventh in 2:33:15.
Other notable Canadian men’s results include Andrew Alexander, who finished ninth overall in 2:14:13, and 2023 Canadian championship winner Thomas Broatch, who was 10th in a time of 2:14:51.
The Toronto Waterfront Marathon celebrates its 35th anniversary this year and there are 35 cheer sites along the course.
