Canada’s women’s soccer team rallied to beat host France 2-1 on Sunday in Saint-Étienne, with Vanessa Gilles’s stoppage time goal being crucial to keeping the defending Olympic champions’ hopes alive in the tournament.
The Canadian now sit at 0 points following a 2-1 win over New Zealand in Thursday’s tournament opener due to a six-point deduction by FIFA on Saturday.
Marie-Antoinette Katoto scored in the 42nd minute for the host side and captain Jessie Fleming tallied for Canada in the 58th minute.
The punishment was levied after two Canadian staff members were caught using drones to spy on New Zealand’s practices before the teams played their opening game.
Canada will conclude group play when they face Colombia on Wednesday at 3 p.m. ET.

FIFA says it’s deducting six points from the Canadian women’s Olympic soccer team and banning three coaches for one year, including head coach Bev Priestman. The decision comes after some staff members on the team were accused of using a drone to spy on other teams at the Olympics and other events.
