Hwy 400 reopens in Barrie area after OPP investigation

All lanes of Highway 400 between Innisfil Beach Road and Mapleview Road in Barrie reopened after police investigated a potential suspicious package, Ontario Provincial Police say.

In a news release Thursday afternoon, the OPP’s Highway Safety division said Aurora OPP received a traffic complaint around 11:00 a.m. for a “disabled motor vehicle” northbound on Highway 400, south of Mapleview Road.

“During the investigation, officers identified the potential of a suspicious package containing explosive materials in the vehicle,” the news release said.

Parts of Highway 400 were closed to ensure public safety, the OPP said.

Police said later that no explosive materials were found in the vehicle and there is no risk to public safety.

The highway fully reopened around 2:10 p.m, after a three-hour closure.

The driver, a 42-year-old woman from Hanmer, was taken to hospital for medical assessment, police said

No injuries were reported.
