Infant dead, woman in hospital after house fire in Toronto’s west end

An infant has died and a woman is in hospital after a house fire in Toronto’s west end early Friday.

The blaze broke out at a detached home on Trethewey Drive, just north of Eglinton Avenue, at about 1:05 a.m., according to Toronto Fire Deputy Chief Jim Jessop.

Crews arrived at the scene to find heavy flames and smoke pouring from the rear of the residence.

Firefighters were able to get into the home and quickly found the infant and woman, who Jessop described as “young.”

Both were taken to hospital, where the infant was pronounced dead. The woman remains in hospital, Jessop said.

Up to four other people were in the house when the fire started and all of them managed to escape unharmed, Jessop said.

The relationship between the occupants was not immediately known, he added.

The fire has since been extinguished.

The Ontario Fire Marshal has been notified and will investigate the cause of the blaze alongside Toronto Fire.
