Man charged with arson after fire outside Jewish day school

A Toronto man has been charged with arson after a fire outside a Jewish school in the city’s north end.

The 34-year-old was arrested Thursday and also faces three counts of failing to comply with probation, Toronto police said in a news release Friday morning.

He was scheduled to appear in court for a bail hearing later Friday.

Police say the accused was using a storage shed outside The Leo Baeck Day School on Arlington Avenue for shelter.

On July 29, representatives from the school noticed he was storing belongings inside the shed and removed them, according to police.

The man returned to the shed around 3:30 a.m. on July 30 to find his belongings gone, police say. Security camera video captured the man leaving the shed, and a short time later it went up in flames, police say.

Heat from the blaze shattered several of the school’s windows and damaged the building, according to police. No injuries were reported.

A spokesperson for Toronto police previously said the service’s hate crime unit had investigated the fire and found “no evidence that this incident was motivated by hate.”
