Man dead after stabbing outside North York apartment building

A man has died after a stabbing outside an apartment building in North York on Friday, Toronto police say.

Investigators say the stabbing happened near Weston Road and Sheppard Avenue West, shortly before 7 a.m.

Officers found a man, who is believed to have been in his 30s, with stab wounds at the scene. He was taken to hospital where he later died.

A man with a knife was arrested at the scene and taken into custody, police say. Insp. Peter Wehby said the man, who is believed to be in his 40s, did not attempt to flee the area.

“We do believe that it started somewhere in the building or in the vicinity of the building and spilled out to the scene [outside],” Wehby told reporters at the scene Friday.

Wehby said the stabbing was a “very targeted” incident, adding that there was no further risk to the public.

He said the men appeared to have known each other but could not comment on their relationship. He said the victim was known to the building residents but could not confirm if he lived there. The suspect, meanwhile, was also known to “stay” at the building but also could not confirm if he was a resident.

The homicide unit has been called in to investigate.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact investigators.
