A man in his 60s was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition after a fire overnight at a Toronto apartment on Saturday, police say.
Officers and Toronto Fire were called to the building near Davenport Road and Symington Avenue around 12:40 a.m., Toronto police said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
Several fire trucks were on the scene, police said. The fire has since been extinguished.
Toronto Fire Platoon Chief Rodney Johnston said the fire happened on the sixth floor of the high rise building.
“Crews encountered heavy smoke in the unit and as a result, a victim was discovered,” Johnston said, speaking at the scene.
Residents were outside the building early Saturday after being evacuated.
“We’re clearing floor-by-floor… making sure that the building is safe for everybody,” Johnston said.
