Police vehicle strikes scooter in Whitby, man seriously hurt: SIU

Ontario’s police watchdog is looking for witnesses after a man riding a scooter was seriously hurt by an unmarked Toronto police vehicle in a Whitby parking lot Tuesday.

In a news release on Wednesday, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said the incident happened in the parking lot of a Canadian Tire outlet at 4100 Garden St. at about 6:20 p.m.

According to the SIU, Toronto police were looking for a man in Whitby and officers found him while he was riding a scooter with another man.

An officer driving an unmarked police vehicle hit the scooter in the parking lot. Another officer driving a second unmarked police vehicle struck one of the scooter riders, an 18-year-old man, seriously injuring him.

The injured man was taken to hospital, where he remains.

The other man on the scooter fled on foot and police arrested him. The SIU said he was not seriously injured.

Anyone with information about the investigation, or who may have photos or videos, is urged to come forward to speak to the SIU.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police officers in incidents that may have resulted in death, serious injury, the discharge of a firearm or allegations of sexual assault.
