A Toronto police officer convicted of multiple crimes including theft and fraud was arrested at an airport over the weekend while trying to leave the country, police say.
Const. Boris Borissov, 48, was arrested by the Service de police de la Ville de Montreal (SPVM) on Saturday while trying to leave the country at Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport, Toronto police said in a release Monday.
Borissov was due to appear in court at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre Monday morning, police say. He now faces one charge of failing to comply with recognizance.
Borissov was already facing one charge of failing to comply with a release order for failing to appear in court at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre in June, police say.
Borissov was awaiting sentencing at the time of his arrest
Found guilty of stealing missing person’s belongings
According to the Toronto Star, Borissov was found guilty of all 15 charges against him in a case before the Ontario Superior Court in May, including fraud, theft and obstruction of justice.
In April of 2022, Borissov was arrested and charged for allegedly taking the possessions of a missing person in a 2022 police investigation, according to a police release from the time. Police said the officer gave the missing person’s debit card to another person, who used it to make a purchase at a Mississauga store. Police further alleged the officer and the same man fraudulently obtained motor vehicles.
Court document show Borissov was accused of multiple crimes that took place from 2020 to 2022, including stealing credit cards and a luxury watch during his police duties, being in possession of a stolen car and falsifying a police report. As the Star reported, he was later found guilty.
He is due to appear in court for sentencing on Sep. 10, according to the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General.
Borrisov faces 10 charges related to his conduct in that investigation, including theft and fraud.
Borissov, who has 16 years of service with Toronto police, has been suspended with pay, police say.
