Canada’s Alysha Newman is going for a medal in the Olympic women’s pole vault final at 12:15 p.m. ET at Stade de France in Saint-Denis, north of Paris, on Wednesday.
The 30-year-old Delaware, Ont., native qualified seventh on Monday.
Canada is also competing for a medal when Jean-Simon Desgagnes takes part in the men’s 3000m steeplechase final at 3:43 p.m. ET.
De Grasse fails to qualify for Olympic 200m final
Defending Olympic champion Andre De Grasse won’t race in the men’s 200-metre final after failing to advance in the event’s semifinal on Wednesday at Stade de France.
The 29-year-old from Markham, Ont., finished third in his semifinal at 20.41 seconds Wednesday at Stade de France.
He was officially eliminated for Thursday’s final when the third and fourth finishers in the next semifinal finished with better times.
The six-time Olympic medallist also missed the 100 final on Sunday, the first time in his career that he missed an Olympic final in the 100, 200 or 4×100 relay final.
He ran a season-best time of 9.98 seconds in the 100 semifinals but finished fifth in his heat.
Fellow Canadians Aaron Brown (20.57) and Brendon Rodney (20.59) also missed the cut.
