A 19-year-old male has been sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison after being found guilty of dangerous operation in a crash that killed an 18-year-old woman and injured several others in King Township last year.
York Regional Police officers were called to the intersection of King Road and 8th Concession just before 7 a.m. on Feb. 18, 2024.
Officers found a black Infiniti G37, which had six occupants in it at the time, had struck a light pole. An 18-year-old woman was pronounced deceased at the scene, while three others – aged 19 and 18 – suffered serious injuries. The driver, who was 18 at the time, was uninjured.
The investigation uncovered that the driver travelled 200 km/h before the crash.
On Feb. 27, 2024, Denrick Rose, 19, of Brampton, was charged with a dangerous operation, causing death, three counts of dangerous operation causing bodily harm and failing to comply with the release order.
At the time of the collision, police said Rose was on a release order for previous unrelated charges. He was held in custody since being arrested.
On Wednesday, police said Rose was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison and handed a 10-year driver’s licence suspension.
In a news release, York Regional Police said excessive speed is the most common contributing factor to fatal collisions.
“Your decisions behind the wheel can determine the future for you, your family, and other motorists,” police said.
