Carjacking a cop car? Durham police say man tried to steal cruiser, officer’s gun

An Ajax man is facing charges after he allegedly tried to carjack a Durham Regional Police cruiser and steal an officer’s gun.

It happened on Wednesday, June 5, at around 4:35 p.m. in the area of 1400 Victoria St. E. in Whitby.

Investigators say the suspect approached a female officer’s cruiser and tried to remove her from the vehicle while reaching for her firearm.

Failing to obtain the gun or the cruiser, the man fled in his vehicle.

A search for the suspect commenced and with help of the K9 unit and a police helicopter he was located driving near Highway 401 and Stevenson Road.

“Officers were able to pin in the vehicle and take the male into custody without incident,” a police release states.

Daniel Patrick Junior McKnight, 32, is facing charges of robbery, attempt to disarm peace officer, assault peace officer, fail to stop and dangerous operation.

He was also charged with two counts of breaching his probation.
