SIU probes man’s death near Ossington station

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is looking into the circumstances of a man’s death after he became pinned under a TTC bus near Ossington station and later died from his injuries.

The incident happened near Bloor Street and Ossington Avenue just before 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Police said a man believed to be in his 50s exited the subway station when a TTC bus turned right to go south on Ossington Avenue. The victim is said to have fallen onto the roadway and was pinned under the front right side of the bus.

The man was rushed to a trauma centre with life-threatening injuries, where he later died.

The SIU said the man was allegedly “behaving in a strange manner” before the fatal collision, and officers at the scene spoke to him moments before he was struck by the bus.

Authorities said efforts are underway by the coroner’s office to confirm the identity of the deceased, who is described as Asian, five foot four and approximately 176 pounds. He wore green camouflaged pants, a dark-coloured winter jacket, and a brown toque.

The province’s police watchdog has taken carriage of the investigation.

The SIU is an independent civilian agency that probes incidents where people died or were seriously injured. Investigators also review incidents where sexual assault has been alleged, or a firearm was discharged at a person.
