Toronto weather alert ends, but blowing snow and gusty winds to persist for evening commute

Weather alerts have been lifted as of Tuesday morning in Toronto and the GTA, but blowing snow and strong gusts of wind will continue to make for challenging travel conditions for the evening commute.

Strong winds blanketed much of the GTA and southern Ontario on Monday. As the powerful cold front moved across the province, various weather alerts were issued, including blizzard warnings, wind advisories, snow squall warnings, and special weather statements.

Some weather alerts remain in effect as of Tuesday morning, with Barrie, Goderich and Owen Sound among some regions under snow squall warnings.

Toronto and the surrounding GTA received a few centimetres of snow overnight. The system tapered off in the early morning hours and will make way for sunny skies by the afternoon. However, it will still be frigid, with morning temperatures in the -10 C range, though the wind will make it feel closer to -17.

Travel could become treacherous in the evening, as the hazardous mix of intense snowfall and strong winds could catch commuters off guard. Five centimetres could accumulate in Toronto by Wednesday morning, when temperatures are forecasted to be around freezing.

The good news is that the rest of the week looks relatively uneventful regarding Toronto’s weather watch. Daytime temperatures will hover around zero for Thursday and Friday as we look ahead to a potential brisk but sunny start to the weekend.
