‘Significant rainfall,’ and heavy fog expected in the GTA, much of southern Ontario Sunday

It’s expected to be a foggy and rainy day across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) Sunday, with as much as 30 mm of rain expected in some locations.

The city remains under rainfall warning issued by Environment Canada Saturday.

“A low pressure system will bring rain, at times heavy, to the region today. Light showers may linger into Monday, however the majority of rainfall will fall through the day today,” Environment Canada said in its warning. “Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.”

Some areas could see 20-30 mm of rain, the warning said.

Environment Canada warned that because the ground is frozen, it has reduced ability to absorb the rainfall. That in turn could lead to flooding.

“Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts. Keep children and pets away from creeks and river banks,” the agency said.

In addition to the rainfall warning, Toronto is also under a fog advisory

“Near zero visibility in fog is expected or occurring. Patchy dense fog has developed and will persist into the morning hours,” the advisory stated.

Drivers are being urged to use extra caution on the roads and to be aware that visibility could quickly reduce to zero in some areas.

The warnings extend from Windsor to Peterborough east-west and as far north as the Sudbury area in Ontario. Another cluster of rainfall and freezing rain warnings are in effect for a large part of Quebec, as well as the Ottawa area.

The warnings come as the GTA sees some unseasonably warm temperatures. A high of 12 C is expected in Toronto Sunday.

The above-zero weather is expected to last for several days.

A high of 4 C is expected Monday and Tuesday, while, a high of 2 C is expected on Wednesday, the first day of 2025. The warmer temperatures are expected to be accompanied by rain or light snow.
