I tried Tim Hortons newest cookies and donuts and one’s unlike anything they’ve done before

Tim Hortons has just released two new flavours of their Dream Cookies and two flavours of the new Filled Ring Dream Donuts, so I took it upon myself to give them all a try and see what they’re like.

I headed out to my local Timmies in the west end of Toronto and picked up all four of the treats, which launched in Canada on June 12.

For the cookies, the two new flavours are Oreo Double Stuf and Caramilk ($2.29 each), while the flavours for the donuts are Caramilk and Wildberry Cheesecake ($2.49 each).

“Our premium Dream Cookies and Filled Ring Dream Donuts offer an elevated twist on the baked goods our guests have always loved – and with the amazing value for money that Tims is known for,” says Carolina Berti, Vice President of Category and Innovation for Tim Hortons.

“Our Dream Cookies and Filled Ring Dream Donuts make for a fun and affordable way to spoil your friends and family with some indulgent and delicious treats to celebrate the everyday.”

So, here’s what I thought of the new menu items at Tim Hortons, and which ones I’d actually order again — and which ones I wouldn’t!

“The new CARAMILK Dream Cookie is a chocolate caramel cookie packed with milk chocolate chips and filled with a deliciously gooey caramel filling,” says Tim Hortons of this menu item.

I’m a big fan of the brand’s Dream Cookie in the Reese’s Minis with Pecans flavour, so I was excited to see how another beloved chocolate bar would translate into cookie format, and I was not disappointed.

Out of the four items I tried, this cookie was my favourite. The chocolate and caramel balance each other out nicely, the inside was soft and ooey-gooey and out of everything I tasted, it’s the one I’d be the most likely to order again.

“The new OREO DOUBLE STUF® Dream Cookie features a soft and chewy cookies & cream base that’s topped and filled with frosting and sprinkled with OREO crumble on top,” says Tims of this item.

Although I really liked the Caramilk cookie, the Oreo version was a disappointment and was my least favourite of everything I tried.

It was overly sweet without anything to balance it, there was very little frosting on the inside and it didn’t really taste like an Oreo, in my opinion. It also kind of tasted a little stale, almost as if it had been sitting out for too long.

In comparison to the Caramilk cookie, the density and dryness of the Oreo cookie really stood out in an unpleasant way, and I didn’t end up finishing this treat.

Next up on the docket were the Dream donuts, and I was excited to give them a try as I don’t think I’ve ever had a filled ring donut from Timmies.

When you bite into the Caramilk Filled Ring Dream Donuts, you immediately get both the topping on the donut as well as the caramel in the ring.

I think I prefer the filled ring donut to the regular filled donut like the Bostom Cream as the distribution of the goo is much more even. In the filled donut, you sometimes get one bite of just a cake donut and then another that’s filled with way too much cream. The filled ring strikes a nice balance, and I’d actually love to try a Bostom Cream in that style!

In terms of flavour, this donut is fine; the chocolate on the top doesn’t give as much of a balance against the sweetness of the caramel as the chocolate in the cookie did, so it’s all kind of just one note of sweetness, but I’m not mad at this donut — I’d eat it if it was given to me, but it’s not one I’d personally order again.

And lastly, the Wildberry Cheesecake filled ring Dream donut seems to be unlike any flavour I’ve ever had at Tims before.

The donut is visually appealing with its pink hue and cute textural elements on top and it lowkey looks like that perfect pastry Homer Simpson would be snacking on while ignoring his duties at the Springfield Power Plant.

It’s sweet, but it’s balanced with the tartness of berries and cheesecake and kind of tastes like a Passion Flakey. Overall, I don’t think I’ve had anything like this from the Tim Hortons menu, particularly in their donut lineup.

I generally prefer chocolate to anything berry-flavoured, so the fact that this was my favoured donut of the two of them surprised me and is a testament to just how unexpectedly delicious it is.

I’d for sure order this item again, and I could actually see it being an ideal “breakfast donut” — you know when you don’t have time to eat a proper meal and just need to order something and stuff it into your mouth? This feels like it could hit that sweet spot nicely.

If you’re looking to pick up a drink with your new Dream donut or cookie, you might want to wait until 2 p.m. as Tims currently is running “Happy Hours” between then and 8 p.m. where you can get certain drinks for just $3.00.

The drinks you can get in the promotion are:

  • Medium Original Iced Latte
  • Medium Unsweetened Iced Latte
  • Medium Vanilla Iced Latte
  • Medium Mocha Iced Latte
  • Medium Caramel Iced Latte
  • Medium Fudge Brownie Iced Latte
  • Medium Vanilla Cream Cold Brew
  • Medium Roasted Hazelnut Cold Brew
  • Medium Tiramisu Cold Brew
  • Medium Baileys Cold Brew
  • Medium Caramel Toffee Cold Brew

Most of these drinks regularly cost somewhere between $3.49 and $3.99, according to prices on the Tim Hortons app, so you’ll be saving up to about $1.00, and those loonies and toonies add up in the long run.

Whatever you end up ordering, I hope you enjoy it! Now Timmies — please bring back the Retro donuts, the Walnut Crunch needs a permanent spot on your menu!

These prices are confirmed at the time of publishing, but they can change at any time. Taxes and fees may not be included.
