Wendy’s has just debuted a new menu item in Canada and Narcity got the exclusive on taste-testing it ahead of its launch in order to give you all the details.

The fast-food chain has launched Saucy Chicken Strips tossed in Buffalo or BBQ sauce that come served with a side of ranch, and they definitely sound good, so I got my hands on them at a restaurant in the west end of Toronto to see how they taste.

“Wendy’s Chicken Strips are made with 100% Canadian all-white chicken breast breaded to crispy perfection,” says the company of their new offering. “They are crunchy on the outside, tender on the inside and perfect to enjoy as a snack or for a meal!”

Here’s how the taste test went down.

My first bite into the Buffalo strip yielded some delicious textural elements — the outside is nice and crunchy while the inside is perfectly soft, which makes for an interesting mouthful.

The Buffalo sauce has that vinegary tang that you’d expect with just a little bit of heat to balance it out, and honestly, it’s kind of perfect. When you dunk it in the ranch dipping sauce it adds a bit more complexity to everything, but it does get rid of the bit of spice so I’d likely skip the ranch on these in the future as I prefer it to be spicy!

I’d describe the spice level as very manageable — if you’re not good with spice, you’ll likely be okay with the level of heat on these, particularly if you pair it with the dipping sauce.

Like the Buffalo version, the BBQ sauce thoroughly coated the chicken strips but didn’t take away from the crunchiness of the chicken, which I found to be impressive.

Although I did like the BBQ sauce version of the strips, this flavour likely isn’t the one I’d buy again as I found the sauce to be a touch too sweet, but I know there are people out there who will like these.

That being said, if these were put in front of me I’d 100% demolish them as they are very tasty — I just prefer the Buffalo flavour more in terms of if I was spending money!

I really like this new menu item, and I can see myself getting it again.

For about $8.00 before tax, the chicken strips are filling, tasty and a nice option if you’re hungry but don’t want a burger.

I only ate one of each flavour while I was in the restaurant and took the rest home to eat later that day. Despite sitting in my fridge for five hours, the sauced strips were still nice and crunchy when I ate them in the evening, which was an unexpected surprise.

While I think these would be great at any time, I feel like these are ideal if you’re either drunk and hungry or if you’re hungover and need a treat as it’s hard to get quality, sauced chicken like this at a reasonable price at 11 p.m. without spending over $20.

One thing to note is that although these are delicious, they are very, very messy, as you’d likely expect of a sauced item — make sure you’re not wearing white when you dig into these!

These prices are confirmed at the time of publishing, but they can change at any time. Taxes and fees may not be included.
