Out the window of seat 16D, positioned just behind the Bombardier jet’s right wing, Nick Costigan saw the gusts coming in. He worried it might be a rough landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport, but nothing out of the ordinary. He put his phone in his pocket so he wouldn’t lose it.

Then he felt the sudden drop. He heard a screeching noise, then felt what he thought was the landing gear buckling underneath the plane.
