Bat tests positive for rabies in York Region’s first confirmed case this year

York Region has confirmed its first case of rabies this year after a bat tested positive for the virus.

The region said in a news release that the bat tested positive for the rabies virus in Whitchurch-Stouffville. The release said that being infected with the rabies virus is “usually always fatal” for animals and humans, but noted that a vaccine is available for people who come into contact with a potentially rabid animal. They also stated that the risk of the infection remains low.
