‘Black people are human beings and they deserve respect’: Take action on refugee shelter report shelved by council, advocates demand

A coalition of refugee advocates is demanding city council take action on a watchdog report that found Toronto discriminated against asylum seekers by denying them access to its shelter system.

At a city hall press conference on Friday, the organizations said ombudsman Kawme Addo’s investigation — which council opted not to debate at a meeting on Wednesday — uncovered systemic problems that had harmed African newcomers, and council had a responsibility to fix them.
