‘Catastrophic impact’: Drunk driver sentenced to eight years for killing Toronto bartender in horrific downtown pileup

A man convicted of killing a 26-year-old Toronto bartender and injuring several others in a horrific impaired driving crash has been sentenced to eight years in jail and handed a 12-year driving ban.

Nitan Thakur earlier pleaded guilty to impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death for killing Gregory Girgis on Canada Day in 2022, as well as five counts of impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm — including for leaving another pedestrian needing his leg amputated.
