The criminal trial of Calvin Au, the Toronto police officer who allegedly assaulted Chadd Facey just hours before the young man’s sudden death, is scheduled to begin in a Brampton court today.
The trial is proceeding on a single count of assault causing bodily harm after prosecutors determined there was no longer a reasonable prospect of conviction on the original manslaughter and aggravated assault charges laid in his death — a “heartbreaking” 11th-hour development that was prompted, the Crown said, by a change in forensic pathology witnesses.
