The defence lawyer for a man accused of being the ringleader in a plot to execute an estranged friend out of fear he would tell police about their alleged ties to ISIS says the Crown’s key witness misled police in a bid to avoid implicating himself, a Brampton jury heard Thursday.
During his cross-examination of Crown witness Mikail Aras, defence lawyer Adam Newman said Aras altered the timeline of events. Newman said Aras did that because he knew telling police he was with the alleged killers on May 29, 2021 — the day of the shooting — and then provided shelter to the accused triggerman after learning that he had shot and killed a man at a Mississauga restaurant, “would mean that you allowed someone you knew to be a murderer to sleep at your house.”
