‘Definitely a superhero’: This Toronto cyclist helped thousands of injured birds soar

In a now-too-quiet house on Indian Road, two Finches were the last birds Brian Armstrong helped save. His friends are now responsible for the pair, which will join the thousands of the city’s feathered friends he helped soar again.

For the last 22 years, the volunteer for Fatal Light Awareness Program (FLAP) Canada was known for his tireless dedication each spring and fall during migration season. Armstrong would ride from his High Park home into the downtown core in the pre-dawn hours, wearing a beat-up yellow jacket and armed with nets, searching for birds that had struck buildings and fallen injured. He often collected dozens of birds and then cycled up to the Toronto Wildlife Centre (TWC) near Downsview Park.
