Doug Ford wants to put the pedal to the metal to build Ontario’s next highway. Here’s why that may not work

Doug Ford’s government is pushing ahead with new legislation it says will kick construction of Highway 413 into high gear by streamlining the environmental assessment process, allowing for around-the-clock construction and eliminating the right to appeal for expropriations.

The 52-km highway project has been stuck in gridlock at the environmental assessment (EA) stage for the past three years, after the federal government decided in 2021 to oversee the province’s work.
