I’m not a big fan of Christmas, but delivering gifts taught me why it matters

For most of my adult life, I have been a bit of a Grinch — or more accurately, like his dog, Max. I don’t actively hate Christmas, but I tend avoid most of it, except for the ugly sweaters and silly ornaments, like a pickle or, a 2020 dumpster fire, or a puffin captain — yes, I have all of these.

What I truly love about the holidays, though, is giving gifts. I feel guilty receiving them, but there’s something special about thoughtfully gifting to others. So, I guess I do like the holidays, but on my terms, like Max. That’s why when I was given to opportunity to volunteer delivering gift boxes for the Toronto Star Santa Claus Fund, and bring my camera to document the experience, it was a definite “hell yeah!” from me.
