Nine racehorses euthanized at Woodbine Racetrack in one month, forcing new rules to address ‘catastrophic’ injuries

Nine racehorses have been euthanized at Toronto’s Woodbine Racetrack since late October, prompting regulators to push new safety measures meant to slow the increase in “catastrophic” injuries.

A total of 15 musculoskeletal injuries have occurred at Woodbine Racetrack between Oct. 28 and Nov. 29 of this year, with nine leading to euthanasia, according to a regulatory letter from Dr. Karin Schnarr, registrar of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), which regulates racetracks.
