The federal housing minister has asked Oakville to pay back more than a million dollars in funds after town council — led by the mayor — rejected a motion to bring in “gentle density” policies including fourplexes, even though he had signed a deal agreeing to do so.
Oakville, which has received $1.28 million in federal funds so far, is the first municipality in Canada to breach its agreement to implement four units of housing “as-of-right” and allow greater density to build student housing for a local college — requirements for receiving $25 million from the federal housing accelerator fund.
