Pain, confusion and not much privacy: A night at one of Toronto’s busiest emergency rooms

The emergency department is where people go when they are acutely ill, but also when they are acutely afraid. Often they have frightened themselves out of their own wits — spinning a fever and aches into terminal cancer. But doesn’t everyone know someone who has been saved from death in a hospital emergency ward? So we go, expecting the worst, and sometimes, we are right.
